Imposter Syndrome

What only comes when you want it least yet, invite it in?

Imposter Syndrome.

You see, as you begin to level up. Whether that be for your personal or professional life it is natural for imposter syndrome to begin to creep in. When new and exciting challenges are coming your way it makes sense that fear or anxiety begin to show more face. The new, the exciting, the unknown, the terrifying. Have you ever experienced this?

According to a recent survey by Innovative MR, about 65% of professionals experience imposter syndrome. But what is it really? Imposter syndrome is the fear and anxiety built around the looming expectation that others will learn or come to understand that you are under qualified or unable to do what is being asked of you.

Sound familiar? Perhaps you have started a new job and felt under qualified to be in the role. Maybe you are graduating from school

The Value of Listening

As a baby you are taught how to speak. When you are in grade school you are taught to spell. In higher education you are taught to write but when are we taught to listen? Listening can be incredibly difficult but it is the most important part of the communication process.

Let’s start with a story.

During a particularly hard day of work, Tom walked up to his boss and told him that he had a headache. A headache so bad, that he did not feel functional and had asked to go home. His boss looked at him and said,

“I used to get headaches all the time but my wife got me on this peppermint essential oil and here, give it a shot! Now you don’t have to go home and can get back to work.”

Dang, he thought to himself. Could he share with him the reasons behind the headache? Could he be

Welcoming The Wet Behind The Ears

A Letter to the Past Working Generations – The Work Environment Has Changed

Dear Grandpas, Grandmas, Aunts, Uncles, Moms and Dads.

Dear Baby Boomers, Gen X and Millennials (give or take a few)

Dear Prior Workforce Generations,

WE ARE HERE!

First, I would like to start by saying we are so excited to be here! Thank you for the warm welcome. Next, I would like to tell you that we are a different type of employee to enter the marketplace and I am excited to tell you why that is and what that means for you!

Online Learning

The most important thing for you to take away from this is that graduating students of 2020, 2021 and now 2022 are a very different kind of graduate than you have seen before. No, the Covid vaccines did not give us third arms

The Waves

“No, I am not looking for help with staffing right now, we are laying everyone off because of Covid.”

“No I am not looking for help with staffing right now, we are in a skeleton crew at the moment.”

“No, I am not looking for help with staffing right now, we are still trying to bring back staff from before our layoffs.”

“No, I am not looking for help with staffing right now, we are trying to stay on budget to compensate for some Covid losses.”

THE GREAT RESIGNATION

All Employees are MIA…

Never Stop Training

This past year on a Sunday night not that long ago after hours of training, game after game and what I would imagine to be more than just a few play drafts the Los Angeles Rams faced the Cincinnati Bengals. With a hyper crowd sitting at the edge of their seats the Rams took the W with a 23-20 final score in 2022’s Super Bowl.

Now when you think about football players, what do you think about? Big, bulky, strong perhaps, maybe, but even more than that, football players are: professionals, athletes, they make meal plans, they take time in the gym, and practice, practice … practice. Athletes are amazing at what they do and yes perhaps some of that is a natural given talent but so much of that is blood, sweat and tears, but why? Athletes train the way they do because they want to invest in their careers and be better every single day. They put work into their craft and

The Keychain to not Getting Ghosted

Everyone has been ghosted before and you are no exception. From the girl next door to “the best interview ever” we have all experienced getting ghosted at one point or another. Unfortunately for the hiring market today the process of getting ghosted continues to be a hot topic running through zoom meetings and emailed memo’s.
“The interview seemed like it went really well, however after leaving two voicemails, sending three emails, and calling four times it appears that the candidate has ghosted us.”

-Written Every Single HR Manager/ Recruiter/ Sourcer at least once since 2019 when Covid began.

Getting ghosted by a candidate is no fun because after getting your hopes up that you have had a good interview or located a good candidate for the role there is still a high potential that the interviewee will be uninterested in moving forward.

A Few Things to Keep In Mind If You Are Getting Ghosted Regularly:

Price – Speed of Delivery – Quality

My mom always told me that you can’t have everything but my customers don’t seem to believe her. Literally, I am not lying. My customers seem to believe that you can have quality, speed of delivery and low price all wrapped up together but I am here to tell you, it is just a myth. Who hasn’t in the past 24 months ordered some shiny, new, cool gadget off their Instagram or FaceBook feed only to learn this lesson one more time? You can’t have high quality, low cost, and immediate delivery. In the current environment of a broken supply chain this runs particularly true.

Quality – when you are looking for quality you are looking for something that will do what it is supposed to do, when it is supposed to do it every single time. It is a combination of reliability and consistency. It does what it is supposed to do and it ALWAYS does what it is supposed to do. It

Must Have List

When parents start to encourage their children to start looking for universities they encourage them to create “must have” and “it would be nice” lists. These soon-to-be graduates then sit down and list things off like, “my school must have an intramural baseball team, a really nice library to study in, be within my price range, and be between 2-6 hours away from home.” They would then continue to say, “it would be nice if my school had a big gym, had a separate building for my degree program, and had cheap dorm options.” As you grow up, oftentimes big decisions such as schools get the same list like weddings, buying a car, buying a house or when looking for a job.

The process of getting a job can be challenging and there are some points in life where you need to take any job offered to you and make it work in a hard situation. This however is not always the case. When

Work Life Balance and Intentional Self Care

Through covid the lifestyle of so many people has changed. Not only did people stay home from work but they stayed home from friends, families, events, activities, restaurants … The list goes on and on. Some people picked up new individual hobbies like knitting or drawing, some people got really into their fitness journey and started lifting weights, boxing or biking but regardless of the new addition you have started a personal care journey that post covid may take a back seat to conflicting obligations.

As cerb ends at the end of October and a large group of the population goes back to working it is important to remember that work life balance is just as important now as it was a year ago if not more.

Taking the time to carve out personal time for yourself and your loved ones is vital to a successful and healthy transition back into a post lock down world. Now, let us preface that
