Focus: The Key to Balancing Family and Work

Balancing family and work can be a challenging task for anyone. It often feels like there are not enough hours in the day to devote to both, and it can be tough to prioritize one over the other. However, by learning to focus on family with family and on work while at work, you can achieve a more balanced and fulfilling life.

Why Focus is Important

Focus is crucial because it allows you to give your full attention to a particular task or person. When you are fully present in the moment, you are better able to connect with those around you and perform at your best. Conversely, when your attention is divided, you are more likely to make mistakes, miss important details, and feel stressed and overwhelmed.

Focusing on Family with Family

When it comes to family time, it’s essential to be present and engaged with your loved ones. This means setting aside distractions

Change At Work

Change is terrifying. From shaving your head fully bald for the first time ever to getting a promotion and your job changing. Change, no matter the type can be scary. The different and unknown approaches and what do you do? Do you run full force at change and accept it for what it is or do you fear change and resist it at all costs?

Sometimes we have the autonomy to choose. When it is in our personal lives and up to us we have the opportunity to pick and choose when change has the opportunity to affect us. However, we do not have the blessing over everything. Often things can change at work and with the lack of control this too can be challenging!

Workplace changes happen each and everyday. This could include changes to technology, company culture, organizational structure, goals, processes and many more. It is normal to feel uncomfortable about it, but at the same time it is

Confirmation Bias

Have you ever had that one coworker that you just can’t seem to click with? A co-worker that brings different ideas and opinions to the table that you don’t agree with? And each time they express their thoughts and opinions, you can’t be bothered to listen or play devil’s advocate? You, my friend, are a victim of confirmation bias.

In a nutshell confirmation bias is when we cherry pick information that is consistent with our own pre-existing beliefs. When we form ideas and beliefs about a person before we really get to see who they truly are, we are letting creative people with new and different ideas down. Individuals that have different opinions and ideas within an organization can actually be a huge asset. You know the saying “two heads are better than one? Imagine what you could do as a business when you have tons of ideas and opinions that are all different from one another.

All in all, when

Imposter Syndrome

What only comes when you want it least yet, invite it in?

Imposter Syndrome.

You see, as you begin to level up. Whether that be for your personal or professional life it is natural for imposter syndrome to begin to creep in. When new and exciting challenges are coming your way it makes sense that fear or anxiety begin to show more face. The new, the exciting, the unknown, the terrifying. Have you ever experienced this?

According to a recent survey by Innovative MR, about 65% of professionals experience imposter syndrome. But what is it really? Imposter syndrome is the fear and anxiety built around the looming expectation that others will learn or come to understand that you are under qualified or unable to do what is being asked of you.

Sound familiar? Perhaps you have started a new job and felt under qualified to be in the role. Maybe you are graduating from school

Preparing Your Mental Health for 2023

A note from one of our student interns as we continue on in 2023.

As we have entered the New Year we take a look back on the goals we accomplished in 2022, the failures we learned from and we try to prepare for a fresh start with new beginnings.  New beginnings can be nerve wracking. We are afraid of the unknown that comes with the New Year. Will I reach my goals? Will I stick to my New Year’s resolution? Will I get that call back for the job I applied for? Not only does the New Year signify our resolutions and celebrations, but also our motivation and what we are going to do to get to where we want to be. But in order to get there, we need to prepare to be the best version of ourselves and that starts with your mental health.

It has been almost three years since the COVID-19 pandemic began and we

Gen Z and the Hierarchy

Understanding how to Get the Most from Gen Z in the Workplace.

If you want to get a Boomer to do something – Tell them to do it!

If you want to get a Gen Z to do something – Give them a bonus!

If you want to get a millennial to do something – Take a picture of them doing it and post it to Instagram.

If you want to get a Gen Z to do something – Tell their mother it needs to be done and she will do it!

As sad as it is, people are still trying to figure out how to get Gen Z motivated to work.  Here is the thing, it is not really all that hard you just have to understand where they are coming from and work to meet their greatest need.  This means we need to go back to Maslow’s hierarchy of needs

The Value of Listening

As a baby you are taught how to speak. When you are in grade school you are taught to spell. In higher education you are taught to write but when are we taught to listen? Listening can be incredibly difficult but it is the most important part of the communication process.

Let’s start with a story.

During a particularly hard day of work, Tom walked up to his boss and told him that he had a headache. A headache so bad, that he did not feel functional and had asked to go home. His boss looked at him and said,

“I used to get headaches all the time but my wife got me on this peppermint essential oil and here, give it a shot! Now you don’t have to go home and can get back to work.”

Dang, he thought to himself. Could he share with him the reasons behind the headache? Could he be

Perspective

When you were a little kid and the butterfly flew away, your ice cream fell off the cone or let’s be honest the wind blew the wrong way … what would you do? You would cry. You would cry because as a baby or a toddler or even a young kid if the slightest inconvenience comes up it feels like the end of the world.

As a teen when your first love breaks your heart, you get a bad grade or a rumour about you is spreading through school … again, end of the world.

Now, are these things actually the end of the world as we know it? No, absolutely not, but for that person that is how it feels at that time. Their emotions are valid but the reality of how they are seeing the situation is completely clouded.

As we grow, we learn and mature. We go through different situations in life that really help

Never Stop Training

This past year on a Sunday night not that long ago after hours of training, game after game and what I would imagine to be more than just a few play drafts the Los Angeles Rams faced the Cincinnati Bengals. With a hyper crowd sitting at the edge of their seats the Rams took the W with a 23-20 final score in 2022’s Super Bowl.

Now when you think about football players, what do you think about? Big, bulky, strong perhaps, maybe, but even more than that, football players are: professionals, athletes, they make meal plans, they take time in the gym, and practice, practice … practice. Athletes are amazing at what they do and yes perhaps some of that is a natural given talent but so much of that is blood, sweat and tears, but why? Athletes train the way they do because they want to invest in their careers and be better every single day. They put work into their craft and
